Again, look for a team like Golden State to snatch Wesley Johnson off the board. Considering the available running backs in this year’s draft at all rounds, trading away a starting cornerback would give you two holes to fill, not just one. However, I think that the Chargers will test the waters, not so much to act, but to perhaps make Cromartie lose his sense of comfort. As our featured columnist mock draft has watched premier defensive talents Ndamukong Suh go to the Rams, Gerald McCoy to the Lions , and Eric Berry to the Buccaneers, the Chiefs are dressed to the nines with the fifth overall pick while their potential dance partners are wearing business casual. This is the state of affairs, with solid talentsstill available but a number of question marks for each.Offensive tackle Russell Okung seems to be namementioned most, but the Oklahoma State product seems tobe more the de facto top option rather than by virtue of immensetalent. The most notable ’sabrematricians’ are Bill James and Rob Neyer who are constantly pushing the envelope with new statistical ideas and baseball principles.Sabre, the company, is also an edgy corporation that in the latest episode comes into Scranton to try and change the way things are done, to make the company more efficient. Right now, I can’t decide if I want to fight Jericho or Undertaker Sadly, I disregarded the other three in the match.

The plays Escobar makes force a watcher to scream “WOW” on a regular basis Jeter plays defense smoothly. Their bullpen is anchored by Joe Nathan, who has been one of the most dominant closers in baseball the past few years. The pitching staff “should” be better in 2010, the young arms have had some seasoning and they have added some stability. Falling StockXavier Henry: (NR, previously No.

Much like the Tommy Hearns matchup, Williams’ lanky frame and long arms imposes an almost impossible challenge for Manny. Actually, he spent most of his time in the backfield…the other team’s. Wesley Sneijder’s free kick took a deflection off Juve stiker Amauri, who was in the wall, and made its way towards the back post. His talent alone could have him higher on draft day, and his combine could give him a boost, but in the end, it will be his fundamentals that will hold him back from being drafted in the first two rounds 7. Michigan hosted its second Junior Day of the recruiting season this past weekend. AC Milan and Manchester United will lock horns once again on Tuesday as the Champions League returns from its winter hiatus. There are few inter-continental rivalries which flare up the same passion among fans as their local derbies.

Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Michael Jordan they’re sacred figures, objects of devotion for the crowds that adore them. And it was Billups who did most of the damage from the three-point line, hitting on 9-of-13 and putting up 39 points to Bryant’s 33.But even more important was the fact that the Nuggets now have it in their heads that they can beat the Lakers in a seven-game playoff. Addai led all rushers with 77 yards on 13 carries and a score. They care about stats.Punters are all about kick averages?not their glowing personalities on TV, not their celebration dances after pinning an opponent inside the ten yard line. Throws well on the run and can probably give us something in the run game.________________This article was written by HenryJames of Barking Carnival Follow Barking Carnival on Twitter: BarkingCarnival.

His work at special teams throughout his career also was excellent. As for figuring out the Big East itself, that’s a question that no one can answer. They had not been so far away from first place or so many games under .500 since the great season of 1925, when they wound up seventh. It was only the third time since 1925 that the Yankees weren’t playing better than .500 ball on June 1. The gloves then cease to be a question of safety and become a weapon I would love to boycott Margacheato But I must admit I would not be able to follow through. He can take chances when warranted or can be conservative with the knowledge his defense will soon get him back on the field. There is little desperation as the coordinator is operating from a position of strength rather than a position of weakness. Campbell made an acceptable debut, even though the back-line leaked 3 goals.

What is with that remark? One would accept an excuse that blames the absence of Van Persie, but what does Wenger do? He has a sly dig at Chelsea’s style of football. Additionally, you may not use this article for commercial purposes or to generate derivative works without explicit written permission. Under the tutelage of head Coach Rocky Long, Urlacher became a ?Lobo-Back,? a cross between a linebacker and safety and garnered much success in Long’s 3-3-5 defense. He recorded 422 tackles?third most in school history? three interceptions, 11 forced fumbles and 11 sacks. Mark DeRosa signs on with the Giants to add a punch to the lineup. If he does not produce in 2010, there might be a slot opening up in El Paso. While this is a step down from a BCS program, UTEP does have some attractive qualities that might draw Leach. The school has rabid fan support and good facilities.Leach is certainly familiar with the territory, as it is just a couple of hours down the road from Lubbock, and thus he will know how to recruit there.

In the lead up to this match, I wrote a post outlining the importance of an on form Ronaldinho for Milan and again against Udinese he showed just how important he is. He looked sharp and aggressive, coming out to challenge shooters and standing up to shots. I’m supposed to hate the Saints. But last night, when Tracy Porter stepped in front of Peyton Manning’s pass and ran it back to 35,000 screaming Black and Gold fans, I jumped out of my seat and threw my arms up screaming, “Run, buddy! Run, buddy!”And when he finally scored, I could feel my heart beating rapidly; that heartbeat you get when your team wins a big game.Every sports fan knows what I am getting at here. America East, 25 (Stony Brook, Maine, Vermont)The America East was supposed to be a good mid-major conference at the start of the year. He has battled wrist, ankle, and shoulder injuries throughout his career, but he has also managed to put up some pretty good numbers despite those aches and missed games.Don’t let me trick you into thinking Antonio Coleman is not one heck of a football player.

He also failed to improve on a rookie season that saw him catch 33 passes for 366 yards (11.1 avg) and two scores, though that is largely because he missed three games. Donald Lee: D (37 catches, 260 yards, 7.0 average, 1 TD, 0 fum)Why Lee gets playing time is beyond me.   The excitement is building and I will be glued to the television for all of these games. He’s not terrible going forward with a 3.38 ERA, but his record falls to 69-60.One would think that Webb would be on a pitch count early in the season, which could jeopardize what has historically been his best month There is a silver lining though. 4 by the Oakland Raiders back in 1998.Too much money is at hand, and it will most likely get invested in offensive or defensive linemen in the top 10, but not a safety. So he may be the second coming of an impact player in the mold of the Ravens’ Ed Reed.

A typical strong rotation likely requires 10-11 strong key contributors, and while the Wolves as of late have had nine key contributors half of them are inconsistent. The whole point of this is simply this for example, the Wolves last season won 10-12 games in the month of January, but that in NO WAY was a playoff roster at all, especially in the Western Conference. Vaughn I’m not accusing you of anything) Other than him, the next biggest slugger was Ken Caminiti, who by the way, died of suspected PED use (yes I am accusing you), with 29 homers that year; Tino Martinez had 28, Bernie Williams 26, Paul O’Neil 24, and Darryl Strawberry 24. They both played together in college at Williams & Mary with Tomlin being two years ahead of Sharper. Â He enjoys pursuing his passion for the game of golf and everything associated with it.

Of course he needs find a way for both parties to agree but with the NFL peaking, a fall without football in 2011 would be catastrophic to the league. . He would not be able to digest the playbook, and would get lost in film study. Green White Checkers 2 laps to go. Jamie McMurray running second to the outside of leader Kevin Harvick. McMurray gets a big push from former teammate Greg Biffle that puts McMurray in the lead for the first time that night and became a record breaking 21st different race leader.Last lap Biffle pulls out, but on the backstretch Clint Bowyer a fellow mid western push McMurray on the outside, McMurray held off a hard charging Dale Earnhardt Jr to win the Daytona 500.McMurray perhaps celebrated like no other kissing the Dayytona 500 logo on the grass and you see how happy he was when he was doing his burnouts and fist pumping as he got out of the car.And when he pulled into Gatorade victory lane he was not short on emotions. ”Where I was last year,” squeezed out by Roush Fenway Racing to cut its teams to the new NASCAR limit of four cars. McMurray said. “Chip [Ganassi] and Felix [Sabates] ? to take a chance on me and let me come back, it means a lot to me.”McMurray cried even more when discussing on how his father left early and was there to celebrate a once and a life time opportunity to be his his son and celebrating the Daytona 500.  ”Unbelievable. As pitchers and catchers prepare to report to Lakeland for the beginning of spring camp, let us review the offseason moves that have lead the team to its current makeup. Many thanks to Ty Tanner for all his help in this article You’re the best, Ty!. Also keep an eye on Mack Brown (RB)?those who thought his signing spelled the end of his run production will be shocked to find that Brantley’s presence actually means the run game just got a boost. His Senior year was the best, putting up 83 tackles and six interceptions, having the honors on the Big Ten Conference First-Team. Their could be a situation (pun intended) with the hair style though.

But there is one thing that Cable has brought to the Raiders?. Hope. What will be missing are baseball and softball.London?s original bid included the two sports, but the events were dropped following the 2008 Beijing Games. There were a number of sports up for consideration as replacements for baseball and softball, but none materialized.Karate, squash, golf, roller sports, and rugby sevens (a quicker, streamlined form of rugby) were up for discussion. The final vote came down to karate and squash, but neither received enough votes to gain inclusion to the Games. Any organization will be lucky to have a player of his caliber. Rather, he became one upon being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He, quarterback Troy Aikman, and wide receiver Michael Irvin became the three-pronged offensive attack of the 1990s’ greatest NFL team Together, they won three Super Bowls in four years.

Bulaga would be a good fit for the Raiders. The Raiders already have a solid running game and an improving defense. Acute tendonitis has left him as a peripheral figure in Carrington, and he has spent much of the last 17 months on the treatment table. Either way, it’s worth the wait in case Leinart falters early in the season.Arizona gets the nod over the Vikings for one reason only. Yes, I said auto racing is must-see TV, not only for her gorgeous smile or appealing features, but for her fierce competitiveness. It?s enough to put fear on the faces of the veterans and blossoming drivers in the auto industry. In a season full of unexpected surprises, no player has been more surprising than Tayshaun Prince.Mr. He is now an analyst for NBC.They traded cornerback Ellis Hobbs to the Philadelphia Eagles for a pair of fifth-round draft picks.

He was fined by the NBA earlier this season after his agent told reporters he had asked the Knicks to trade his client. In his third season in Boston, the 31-year-old House is averaging 7.1 points per game off the bench for the Celtics.House expressed excitement about potentially reconnecting with Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, whom he played for in Phoenix.”That helps a lot,” House said. 2) Play better defense. When you struggle to score like Indiana does, you’re not going to win any games giving up 70 points or more.Whether in man or 2-3 zone, Indiana has got to get more aggressive.Jeremiah Rivers, in particular, must accept the assignment of taking on and shutting down the other team’s leading scorer every game.Overall, the Hoosiers must establish some kind of defensive identity, or they’re just going to keep getting walked over. 3) Go with two guards to start games.Starting both Rivers and Hulls means you have at least one point guard playing out of position.Hulls can shoot the three like a SG, but is severely undersized and not much of a threat to drive.Rivers can defend the 2, but is not a threat to score. I consider myself lucky to have been among the 68,000 plus in attendance that night as United beat Barca 3-1.The site lines at this stadium make Lincoln Financial Field a great venue to watch soccer, which probably explains why Philadelphia has been fortunate enough over the past seven years to host a hand full of International Matches. In 2003 several FIFA Women?s World Cup Games were played at the Linc. Broncos (via Bears) – *Rolando McClain – LB – Alabama If brandon marshal not release by the broncos, and i dont think he will be. the position they have a need in is the middle linebacker position the clearly pick for them  would be mcclain.11.

And these are only a total of five free agent signings, but they would be great quality signings. We would be able to draft best player available pretty much every round as opposed to having to draft needs. Pullen was essentially absent in the Wildcats’ last couple of games but bounced back to have a great game against Baylor. Armstrong might become the starting center in Houston, while Jeffries and Hill continue to scrap for minutes. For the Kings, Hughes will likely replace Martin as the starting shooting guard next to Tyreke Evans This should help Hughes? fantasy value. Both men have ties to Japan, and would be a great start for a UFC return to Japan. In conclusion are we sure being “soft” is a bad things and does it necessarily correlate to winning or being a good player? Especially given as sports talk radio host Bomani Jones so eloquently put it “If Micheal Jordan one of the greatest players and winners of all time, a man who has achieved every accomplishment humanely possible, yet seems no happier for it. “So ownership has rejected multiple requests to revisit signing Johnny Damon.”That’s not to say that there is no way that the Yankees could sign Damon, but his agent, Scott Boras, would have to stop playing games with the Yankees and actually come up with a realistic salary.

Similar to the Red Sox trade of the “Great Bambino,” Montreal fans have seen this move as the final nail in their championship coffin. Most weren’t the heralded, sought after, five star recruits. But if one thing is true, their time at the University of Alabama will forever be, one of the most important.. I see HBK taking out somebody to get directly involved in the match. But when athletes voice their concerns over a track’s safety and a death occurs on that same track, it is completely unacceptable.A young man lost his life while participating in a dangerous sport.

This move meant Fordham star and second year point guard Jio Fontian could transfer, after his request was denied following the 2008-2009 season He did, to USC. Every time we come to Daytona, we just feel?we all feel it, you know, whatever it is,? he said.?We just feel real strong about being here. It was Knowshon Moreno’s break out game.Knowshon thrashed the Florida defense by running past them and jumping over the line for the first T.D of the game. Instead, Bedard pitched well in limited appearances as injuries cost him the better part of two seasons with Seattle.

Brown was the only fat clown dancing around on TNT. They need to chill with that.  Barkley needs to watch the line between having fun and over the top ignorance.  Such late-game heroics earned them the nickname “Cardiac Cats”.The offense peaked in a 45-10 victory over the Chicago Bears on Oct 25. It sounds basic, but based on Wisconsin’s offensive strategy, for them to play well, their starters just need to make shots.Nothing could be more obvious in basketball, but in Wisconsin’s case, that’s all it really comes down to.If you don’t try to work it inside and barely use your bench, as was the case last night, your starters have to be on.If Wisconsin wants to avoid a second straight home upset loss, let’s hope they get it together by 1:00 p.m on Saturday.. Granted, it’s an insult toaluminum to call Greg Nagy a tomato can, but Walker still looked competent out there.A decent grappler probably would’ve submitted the ex-NFLer quickly with some type of leg lock, but Walker did enough to guarantee eyeballs for his next appearance. 6. Bobby LashleyIn contrast to Walker, I’d say Lashley underwhelmed against an embarrassingly out-of-shape Wes Sims.Still, the sheer physicalmagnetism of another former professional wrestler and the unblemished record will conspire to make Lashley an ongoing phenomenon.

No doubt people will look at the honorable mentions and then look at Kelly, the introductory quarterback on this Top 10 list and say, “What the?!?!!…”I don’t think it is that much of a stretch.Statistically, Kelly put up respectable Hall-of-Fame numbers in a very productive 11-year career. According to the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), t he average playing career for an NFL running back is two and a half seasons. Each of the four teams in this league are competitive, hard working, and have undergone a bit of a facelift. Outside Linebacker What a great story David Vorbora has been, going from second to last pick in the draft, to starter in three years time. He is an instinctive defender, quick and alert in zone coverage, and has the athleticism to handle man coverage.

Mangus calls. Then there are the games in which all three of them throw a play into a hat and they draw one scrap of paper blindly. He has already established himself as a threat to the major championships, finishing in the top 10 in three of the four: T-3 at the 2008 Open Championship and T-4 at the 2008 PGA Championship. It may notnecessarily be whether the Red Sox will sign him, but whether how much money he may earn through his performance this season.Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell told MLB ’s Peter Gammons that Beckett will look to have pitch well this season not just because of his contract, but mainly because of his naturalcompetitiveness.”Sure, I think he’s on a mission,” Farrell told Gammons “But not because of the contract That’s the way he is every spring. This is all my opinion! Myopinion! My opinion! Don’t like? Don’t read.[ Side note: The above picture was chosen because it showed exactly what’s happening to Legacy. Â Favre spent fourteen years chasing another title, but year-after-year, he came short.Peyton Manning may only be four seasons removed from his only Super Bowl victory, but the comparisons are too big to ignore. Both men have a certain bravado about them that lures sports fans too them. Jim Brown was not only a hall of fame football player, but his impact in the black community as an activist is still being felt to this day.In addition to sports, Brown was an actor, starring in the 1967 war movie The Dirty Dozen. In 2002, he was named by The Sporting News as the greatest professional football player ever. Because Shaq or Varejao aren’t floor spacers, Orlando dropped Dwight Howard behind Jamison to discourage the Cavs from feeding him the ball.Orlando proved that sometimes when you score is more important than how much you score.

In just two years Sampson committed major NCAA violations and lied about them which led three years probation in 2008.Under Knight the Hoosiers only missed two tournaments in a row once, which was his 1971 and 1972 seasons?the first two season Knight was in charge at Indiana. will attempt to get its first win and captain Jon Shuster gets yet another chance to wash the bad taste out of his mouth. All three U.S. By my estimation, Jones is playing better ball than just about every Big East player.Jones is coming off an impressive game against the Pirates where he scored 28 and on the season, he is averaging 21.4 points (third in the Big East), 6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game Jones’ thick frame will be a concern for Pitt. The one who allowed Thierry Henry to play Handball during the play off against Ireland apparently has a chance to redeem himself this summer. That said, the kid is 6-5, 200 pounds, and could certainly be that elite No 2 receiver who keeps the pressure off, rising junior, A.J Green next year?if he chooses to become as much.

Each columnist will name the player that they believe their team should draft when that team’s turn is up on the clock. For the Buffalo Bills, I am going to co-ordinate our selections with fellow Bills featured columnist Chris Trapasso. This mock draft experiment has already started this week now that the Super Bowl has come and gone So far, the following results have been:St Louis Rams selected Nebraska def. In fact, he plays with such intensity that Brandon Roy once publicly said that he thought Pendergraph was insane. He was joking…I hope.Pendergraph is still raw, but as he continues understanding the NBA game (and developing that midrange jumper Howard must have taught him), he may prove to be the long-term answer to the Blazers’ backup power forward problem.Grade: B Rudy FernandezAfter a rookie season full of plays that made him an instant fan favorite in Portland, it seems that Rudy has hit a bit of a sophomore slump.I know he’s been hurt (along with everybody else…), but there’s no denying he hasn’t been the Rudy we know and love. In Nagano, 1998, he won silver, but since then it has been only bad luck at the Olympics. If you are going to be the most important player, by far, it means a large part of your teams success falls on your shoulders and winning is more in your hands than any other player. I am a big advocate of stats, although not so much QB rating because it can skewed easily. To silence their whining, Favre throws his 1,000th career TD pass against the Oakland Raiders      Oct.

Company histories preach an archetypical Founder’s Story to the young, poorish sales novices, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, who are imbued with the spirit to walk into the sales jungle and emerge rich.Cheever, naturally, beats you to the comparison with Death of a Salesman, the play referred to by a sales colleague as an “abominable monstrosity”. Dissemblingly, he claims to be a writer who makes a better impression in person than on paper, but this is merely good sales technique. While he plays the ing? at product-pitching, his writerly training is quietly in evidence. He softly enunciates the aura of sorrow of the sales instructor, works for a manager with the countenance of “a man who had just murdered a chorus girl” and finds he enjoys sales. Cheever delights in being the “Oscar Wilde of the GM salesroom”, a fragrant position amid its testosterone stench. However, beyond the bonhomie lies a more urgent, quietly angry agenda, as he criticises the reluctance of free-market culture to acknowledge redundancy as a human rather than economic issue.

Despite his genial persona, his complaints against Digest chairman George Grune, who downsized the company in the mid-1990s, rumble through the book.Cheever’s account stands as the fall-guy to Barbara Ehrenreich’s more serious-minded book, Nickel and Dimed. It also recalls David Sedaris, who pursued similar “slacker” employment in Me Talk Pretty One Day and The Santaland Diaries. Like Sedaris, Cheever embraces an American tradition of melancholic, absurdist blues. He finds the lot of the hourly-paid worker a mixture of demoralised tedium and occasional exhilaration, as when he attains the highest monthly profit selling for General Motors. Even here, there is a literary antecedent, his wife points out: Harry Angstrom manages a Toyota dealership in John Updike’s Rabbit is Rich. Ben Cheever, however, does not become wealthy, though a claim to spiritual enrichment is unavoidable. The Cheever family business is writing, with novelist sister Susan and New York Times critic wife Janet Maslin complementing the Pulitzer-winning father.

Selling Ben Cheever skilfully dismantles the novelist’s hubris, providing a rare voice for the pleasures and dignities of working life while recognising that the American Dream remains a “noble falsehood”.Cheever constructs from what he refers to as a gloomy subject a thoughtful study that lacks bitterness, but not bite. By the end, you want to buy a computer, car or, even, just a sandwich from him, such are the agonies of commission-based work. Better to buy the book, and hope he negotiated a good percentage.. And this, says JR, the oil man, “is the village where they film Crossroads.” We are driving in his battered pick-up through the pretty village of Redmile in the Vale of Belvoir, on the Nottinghamshire-Leicestershire border, a flat plain of prime agricultural land fringed by a forest ridge topped with autumnal golds and browns. They think they have discovered oil beneath the heavy clays of the Vale of Belvoir, until now most celebrated as a good place to grow wheat or oilseed rape, or over which to gallop in full fox-hunting red with one of the celebrated local packs, such as the Quorn or the Belvoir, whose kennels are just up the road from Redmile, in the grounds of the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland.

As a result, the vale’s traditional bucolic image is being threatened by the prospect of “Dallas comes to Nottingham” – it’s the nearest major town to the four sites where a Canadian oil firm has just received licences from the British government to begin drilling. To the delight of the tabloids, and the local television companies, one of the farmers whose land lies in the middle of the potential new oilfield rejoices in the initials JR, a name that became a byword for double-dealing and boardroom skulduggery in the Eighties Texas oil soap. James Reid has, as a result, found himself leaning over gates at his farm near Granby wearing a Stetson and smoking a fat cigar provided by enterprising photographers.”I’m the Oo-Aar JR,” he says with farmer-booted irony. Even the normally sober Financial Times introduced its report on how the Canadian firm is trying to raise £1m in the City to further finance the project by comparing the area with the Crazy Horse field in the Gulf of Mexico, and talking about an imminent string of gushers along the A52.Everyone wants it to be so. The Canadian firm is led by John Frey, a 69-year-old veteran oilman from Alberta in Canada who has spent more than £1m of his own money on a detailed seismic survey of the area.

There may be those who, in these days of perpetual competitions and cups, welcome the haphazard nature of the international fixture list that has just gone by. Indeed, I read of some of the matches as “friendlies” – as if, in the circumstances, they could be anything else.If all three of the principal sides of the Southern Hemisphere were going to be floating about Europe, surely there was a case for trying to ensure that, at least, New Zealand played England and France?Comprehensive coverage of the five European countries (for there is no reason why Italy should be a punchbag) against the Southern Hemisphere would have produced 15 matches This is too many. If only two of the Southern Hemisphere sides had toured, there would have been 10, which could have been fitted into just over a month. My own Britain and Ireland side, by the way, would be: Robinson (England); Hickie (Ireland), O’Driscoll (Ireland), Harris (Wales), Luger (England); Wilkinson (England), Howley (Wales); Smith (Scotland), Wood (Ireland), Vickery (England), Johnson (England, capt), Grewcock (England), Hill (England), S Quinnell (Wales), Wallace (Ireland).. Neil Back has never been one to dip out of a game of rugby, even after being bludgeoned into the middle of next month by one of the biggest Springbok packs ever to take the field in anger. When the Barbarians hierarchy announced yesterday that the England loose forward and occasional captain would miss tomorrow night’s showpiece match with the touring Australians in Cardiff, there was no suggestion that Back was guilty of pulling a flanker, so to speak.
Back emerged from last weekend’s victory over South Africa with a badly bruised hand; indeed, the damage was so considerable that there were dark mutterings about a possible broken bone. He reluctantly ruled himself out of another meeting with the Wallabies he faced them twice for the Lions during the summer, and again with England at Twickenham a little over a fortnight ago but has yet to make a decision on his availability for Leicester’s big Premiership meeting with second-placed London Irish at the Madejski Stadium on Sunday.Rob Howley, the Cardiff scrum-half, will captain the Baa-Baas in front of his home town audience, and will have a fair bit of know-how at his side.

Six Springboks Percy Montgomery, Breyton Paulse, Stefan Terblanche, Braam van Straaten, Mark Andrews and Corne Krige have been named in the starting line-up, along with a couple of highly experienced Antipodeans: Ian Jones, the former All Black lock, and Pat Howard, the Wallaby centre who aims to resurrect a Test career on hold since the mid-1990s.Bob Dwyer, the coach of the invitation side, has acknowledged the Baa-Baas’ tradition of including an uncapped player by picking the New Zealander Paul Miller at No 8. In many ways, though, the most intriguing figure will start the game on the bench. Mat Rogers, a highly successful rugby league wing from Australia, switched codes last summer and is expected to challenge hard for a Wallaby place when next year’s Tri-Nations business comes around. If he shows a little Jason Robinson-style dash tomorrow night, he will help his cause no end.Down among the so-called “developing nations”, the board of Rugby Canada has reinstated Dave Clark as their Test coach in a volte-face of staggering magnitude. The union’s decision to sack Clark last August led to fierce confrontation with the leading players, who had no hesitation in taking the ultimate step of refusing to play a home match with Australia scheduled for last month.

That game was scrapped, as were Tests in Dublin and Edinburgh, when officials admitted they could not field a representative side.Pat Parfrey, the recently-elected president of Rugby Canada, conceded that “due process had not been followed” when Clark was given the push, supposedly for attempting to professionalise the top end of the Canuck game “I’m thrilled by the decision,” Clark said. “It justifies all the turmoil and reinforces what people across the country had been thinking.”BARBARIANS TEAM (v Australia, Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, tomorrow): P Montgomery (South Africa); B Paulse (South Africa), S Glas (France), P Howard (Australia), S Terblanche (South Africa); B van Straaten (South Africa), R Howley (Wales, capt); D Morris (Wales), R Ibanez (France), D Young (Wales), I Jones (New Zealand), M Andrews (South Africa), C Krige (South Africa), O Magne (France), P Miller (Otago). Replacements: R Cockerill (England), C Dowd (New Zealand), S Mayling (New Zealand), P Lam (Samoa), W Swanepoel (South Africa), C Spencer (New Zealand), M Rogers (New South Wales).. It is a couple of months since Francis Baron, chief executive of the Rugby Football Union, identified the major challenge facing the game over the next decade: the raising of standards for the many, so that the few do not become bored witless. But he was correct to warn that a World Cup needs more than five possible semi-finalists to make an impact on those squillions who do not know a top-class prop forward from the fat bloke next door and care even less.In that context, the past three weeks of international rugby – 17 front-line matches featuring 14 teams, seven of them from the southern hemisphere – have been like manna from heaven. The Australian hegemony has been broken, John Mitchell has introduced a thrilling generation of brat-packers to the New Zealand mix, Argentina have established themselves as a top-six act for the first time in their rugby history, Ireland have shown clear signs of progress and England and France have joined hands across the Channel to end all talk of a “gulf” between the hemispheres, possibly for ever. When Clive Woodward, the England manager, ventured to suggest before last weekend’s emphatic victory over the Springboks that the gap between north and south no longer existed – indeed, had not been in evidence for some considerable time – he was more right than wrong. It took Woodward’s own red rose collective a year or so to pick up the pace being set by the Wallabies, the Springboks and the All Blacks, largely because those three superpowers had embraced full-time professionalism at least a year before everyone else.

The moment England were up to speed, they beat Gary Teichmann’s record-seeking Boks at Twickenham, thereby confirming their ability to win a one-off match against any opposition on earth.Since then, they have beaten the Boks in Bloemfontein as part of a three-match winning streak, and won successive Tests against the Wallabies. Twenty-first century Twickenham is as much a fortress as 1970s Twickenham was a Wendy house, for England have not been beaten in south-west London since Jolly Jonah went through them like a dose of South Seas salts almost 26 months ago. It is by some distance the best home record in world rugby, and that fact alone demands that Woodward and company be placed at, or very near, the top of the tree. The key to all this? Organisation. It is not only England who have capitalised on the increasingly systematic maximisation of playing resources, although Woodward is undeniably a world leader in this area. Ask Bernard Laporte in Paris, or Warren Gatland in Dublin, to explain the sharp upturn in Test performance in recent weeks and months, and they will point their fingers in the same direction.

Brazilian fans may turn on their own team, but for the Centenario stadium to boo Uruguay in a match of this importance was unthinkable.Uruguay’s stunning 3-0 victory owed as much to their fans as to their team. The midfielder Alvaro Recoba, one of Uruguay’s best players, acknowledged as much after the match, when he sat on the crossbar to celebrate with the fans. The forward Dario Silva dedicated the triumph to the supporters who had gone to the airport to jeer and jostle the Australians on their arrival.Victory sent Montevideo into a frenzy of wild emotion, though the streets had regained their customary tranquillity within a few hours. The Uruguayans, it seemed, had used up so much nervous energy in the 90 minutes that the celebrations quickly burnt themselves out.Yesterday the city awoke with a temporary respite from the air of melancholy which normally hangs over it.

The TV stations were showing endless reruns of the Australia game and retrospectives of the marathon qualification campaign. One station broadcast a package of highlights from the past 20 months to the soundtrack from Mission Impossible. But now the mission has been accomplished, and the result is an incalculable boost to the nation’s self-esteem.Other countries have their history, it is said, and Uruguay has its football. Created in the 19th century as a buffer state between Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay has few claims on world attention. It was the first country to install a welfare state and a 40-hour working week.

Such advances, though, have been largely forgotten as economic problems take their toll. But on Spring afternoons such as Sunday’s, its proud footballing tradition shines brightly. The global game owes a huge debt to this country with a population of little more than three million. The men in the sky blue shirts changed the way the sport is both played and watched. No one had heard of Uruguay when they turned up for the Paris Olympics of 1924, but they swept to victory with a new style of play, based less on the hard running of the English, more on twists, turns, balletic feints and short passes. It was football ideal for those with a low centre of gravity, the small guy with little chance to shine in less subtle sports.Contemporary observers were enraptured Uruguay’s success set off a fever for the game. Indeed, it is reasonable to see 1924 as the birth of modern international football.Four years later Uruguay retained their title in Amsterdam. On the back of their success they were given the task of staging the first World Cup, and built the Centenario stadium for the purpose. They duly became the first winners of the Jules Rimet trophy. With their game torn by the transition to professionalism, Uruguay stayed away from 1934 and 1938, but they were back for the next World Cup, in Brazil in 1950.

They won that, too, inflicting a defeat on the hosts which is considered the biggest setback in Brazilian football’s collective memory. It remains the only time Brazil have lost a World Cup game, tournament or qualifying, on their own soil.Four years later the run finally came to an end. At last Uruguay lost a World Cup match – an epic semi-final against the great Hungarians which went to extra time. Many saw it as the greatest match ever played, but it marked the end of an era for Uruguay. They failed even to qualify for 1958 Their methods were no longer revolutionary. The physical development of the game had left them looking slow. But the honour of the country still had to be defended, so Uruguay took refuge in blanket defence.

We have a chip on our shoulder.”It will not have escaped the attention of Washington devotees that another of their coaches, Joe Gibbs, lost his first five games when he took charge in 1981. Gibbs won three Super Bowls over the next decade: Schottenheimer, may yet have the last laugh. All smiles too for the much-maligned Pittsburgh quarterback, Kordell Stewart. Once hailed as the game’s next superstar, he has endured three seasons of mediocrity, his talent seemingly destined to remain unfulfilled. A strong showing at the end of last season offered hope, and he has continued the improvement into 2001.Under Stewart’s guidance, Pittsburgh negotiated an awkward trip to Nashville, their 34-24 win over the Tennessee Titans. Stewart threw for a season-high 254 yards, including two touchdowns, and also ran 48 yards for another. At the beginning of the season, Peyton Manning was regarded as a more likely Super Bowl quarterback, but his Indianapolis Colts have been one of the year’s major disappointments. Manning threw for 370 yards in his side’s 40-21 humbling at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, but he also gave up four interceptions. The result effectively terminates Indianapolis aspirations, and may hasten the departure of their coach, Jim Mora.

“When you turn the ball over five times, four interceptions, you ain’t going to beat anybody,” he said “We threw the game away. It was pitiful, absolutely pitiful.”Unlike soccer, coaching casualties are rare during a gridiron season, but Mora is not the only man facing uncertainty. Tom Coughlin’s seven seasons at the helm in Jacksonville seem set to end following the Jaguars’ late capitulation against the Baltimore Ravens, while George Seifert’s three Super Bowls with San Francisco will cut little ice in Carolina, where the Panthers lost their 10th game in a row, 10-3 against Atlanta. Dick LeBeau may also be seeking employment following the Cincinnati Bengals’ lamentable 18-0 effort against the Cleveland Browns. No such concerns for New England’s Bill Belichick. When he lost his quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, early in the season, Patriot hopes looked bleak.

Bledsoe’s replacement, Tom Brady, has been the surprise of the season, however, and his four touchdown passes helped upset the New Orleans Saints 34-17.. Laura Hillenbrand struck a blow for female sportswriters yesterday when she won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award, worth £12,000 in all to the winner. Now, she is working on the movie version, which is expected some time next year.Seabiscuit (Fourth Estate) tells the story of a written-off race horse, trained by a nearly mute trainer and ridden by a one-eyed jockey, who in the late 1930s and early 1940s captured the imagination of the American sporting public with a string of victories.Asked what compelled her to write the book, Hillenbrand said: “I believe this is the greatest underdog story in sports history, not only because the horse was an underdog, but because the owner, trainer and jockey were as well. This is the kind of story that journalists wait a lifetime for.”Hillenbrand, who lives in Washington DC, collected a prize of £10,000 cash, a £1,000 free bet and a specially commissioned bound copy of her book, at a ceremony at London’s Sportspages bookshop. The other short-listed titles, each of which won £1,000 cash and a £750 free bet plus a leather bound copy, were: A Voyage For Madmen by Peter Nichols, about the fateful 1968 Golden Globe yacht race; Full Time, Tony Cascarino’s straight-talking autobiography told to a former William Hill winner, Paul Kimmage; Looking For a Fight, David Matthews’ account of his foray into professional boxing; and Kevin Mitchell’s examination of that sport’s brutality, War, Baby: The Glamour of Violence..

Britain’s faint hope of staging the 2005 World Championships in Sheffield following the collapse of plans to host it in London was swiftly eradicated yesterday. UK Athletics can apply and it will be evaluated with the other applicants.”A UK Athletics spokeswoman said: “This didn’t come as a great surprise… all the interested parties need to decide now whether Sheffield should bid.”The response in Monaco should make it clear that the way forward for UK Athletics is not via Sheffield. Instead, Moorcroft will turn his attention to ensuring that his sport gets the maximum share of the money saved by abandoning all intent of hosting an event that Tony Blair personally guaranteed would be held at Wembley stadium.Up to £40 million of Lottery money had been bid for to support the Sheffield bid, and Jowell has guaranteed the sport will receive another £8m for improvements around the now rejected Picketts Lock site in north London. Moorcroft’s task is to ensure that such funds do not shrink or become absorbed into regenerating sport in general at grass roots level.Meanwhile, the Council has rejected an appeal from the women’s triple jump world record holder, Inessa Kravets, against her two-year suspension imposed after testing positive for the male hormone testosterone in July last year.
